Talking to Your Child's Primary Medical Provider (PMP)
Visiting your child’s PMP’s office can sometimes make you feel nervous. Here are
some tips that may help you at your next appointment.
Before your Appointment:
Prepare ahead of time. This can help you get the most out
of the visit.
Write down any questions or concerns you have and bring
them with you.
Be sure to write down any medicines your child is taking.
Bring a friend or relative with you. You might feel more
comfortable.
At your Appointment:
Ask questions.
Expect the following from your doctor. He or she should:
» Help you keep track of your child's health
» Explain your child's growth and development
» Find the cause of your child's illnesses and
treat it
» Give a referral to a specialist if needed
» Update vaccines
Listen to the PMP’s instructions
Ask the PMP to write things down for you, if you don’t understand
what he or she is saying
After the Appointment:
Follow the PMP’s advice
Make sure medicine the PMP prescribes is given as instructed.
Call the PMP’s office if symptoms change or get worse once
you get home
Don't be shy about calling the doctor between visits if
you have questions or concerns.
